Crews are progressing with new decking and steel supports on the Story Bridge, with the city-side footpath expected to reopen later this year following months of closure.
Restoration Works Underway
BCC has commenced works to replace the ageing footpaths on the Story Bridge, with one side expected to reopen before the end of 2025. Crews have begun installing more than 1.5 kilometres of locally sourced steel to support new lightweight decking.
The western, city-side footpath is scheduled to reopen first, while the eastern side is planned for completion in early 2026.
Background of the Closure
Both pedestrian and cycling footpaths on the bridge were closed in March 2025 following safety concerns identified after severe weather linked to Tropical Cyclone Alfred. Engineers reported water seepage through the bridge’s concrete, prompting a full structural assessment.
The closure disrupted thousands of commuters who regularly used the bridge, with many shifting to ferries, vehicles, or alternative crossings.

Materials and Installation
The replacement decking has been manufactured overseas due to the lack of local supply, while Australian steel and installation crews are being used. Sections of the decking have already arrived, with further deliveries continuing over coming months.
Special mobile platforms are being used above the river to allow safe installation. Similar decking has previously been fitted at the Cultural Centre boardwalk near the Queensland Art Gallery and State Library.

Investment in the Bridge
A total of $6.9 million has been allocated for the replacement decking, adding to nearly $80 million invested in Story Bridge works since 2019.
A separate $5 million restoration business case, jointly funded with the Federal Government, is scheduled for completion in 2026. This study will outline a staged program to maintain the 85-year-old bridge over the next 15 to 20 years.
Looking Ahead
The Story Bridge, built to last around 100 years, remains a key transport connection for Brisbane. Once reopened, the city-side footpath will restore pedestrian and cycling links at Kangaroo Point. Planning supported by all three levels of government continues as the bridge approaches its centenary in 2040.
